Our Prayer Shawl Ministry is one of hundreds, located in churches in all 50 sates and Canada. The Prayer Shawl ministry was founded 15 years ago, by Janet Bristow and Victoria Galo, two graduates of the 1997 Women’s Leadership Institute at Hartford Seminary in Connecticut. The purpose of the shawls is to bring solace, comfort, hope and warmth to those either suffering from loss or celebrating a life event.
Attached to each shawl is a prayer of blessing by Janet Bristow:
“May God’s grace be unto this shawl – warming, comforting, enfolding and embracing; may this mantle be a safe haven – a sacred place of security and well being; may the one who receives this shawl be cradled in hope, kept in joy, graced with peace and wrapped in love.”
Thus far, our group has produced hundreds of shawls. The are given to each confirmed child in the parish. The shawls are never sold, but instead are given away to those in need. We gather together to crochet or knit the shawls.
